Burden of Roles
Therapy for Women Pulled in Every Direction
Everyone already agrees you do a lot. That agreement is not the same as help.
The modern bind is specific. You are the partner who handles the specialist appointments. The mother still on call after the child is grown. The daughter who notices the household running out of everything. Together they produce a woman who is praised for being capable and privately running on fumes.
For many women, an extraordinary accumulation of roles can feel like a burden, rather than the pride they once expected. You may still be working, managing a household, supporting aging parents, helping adult children who have not yet become emotionally or financially independent, or caring for a spouse whose health or functioning has begun to change. There is often little room to acknowledge exhaustion because the people depending on you genuinely do need help. Love, responsibility, frustration, resentment, guilt, and worry can become tightly intertwined. The result can be a woman who appears highly capable on the outside, while privately feeling depleted, trapped, lonely, or increasingly disconnected.
Living in this state of constant responsibility takes a toll on the nervous system. When there is always another problem to anticipate, or another crisis that might occur, the body functions as though it must remain perpetually prepared for danger. Stress hormones remain activated, muscles stay tense, sleep becomes lighter or more disrupted, concentration suffers, and even small demands can begin to feel overwhelming. You may become more irritable, anxious, tearful, or unable to experience pleasure without fully understanding why.
Sessions together can offer an important place to put down some of that emotional weight. What we look at is the mechanism, not the martyr story. Where you say yes before checking in with yourself. Where perfection is the price of being loved, employed, or left alone. Where boundaries are necessary, albeit uncomfortable. Some of the load is love. Some of it is fear. Some of it is a family system that will keep handing you the clipboard until you set it down.
You do not have to become a different kind of person to do this work. You have to become honest about the cost. If you are tired in a way that a weekend cannot touch, make an appointment. Bring the list if you want. We will not add to it.
