Midlife Anxiety

Therapy for Midlife Anxiety and a Path You Can Stand Behind

Women often come in with a private ledger. The degree they did not finish. The city they left. The marriage they stayed in, or did not. The years given to a parent, a firm, a child who needed more than anyone budgeted for. The body that will not do what it did at thirty-five. Anxiety in this chapter is frequently the nervous system trying to close a gap between the life that was supposed to happen and the one that did. It can look like rumination, irritability, insomnia, a sudden intolerance for wasting time, or a fear that the next decade will be a quieter version of the last.

We do not spend the hour prosecuting your past. We spend it mapping. What is actually unfinished versus what is simply over. What you still want—work, love, health, solitude, a different city—and what would have to change for that to be more than a mood. Perimenopause may be part of the weather. It is not the whole climate. The point is a forward path you can recognize yourself on, with decisions you are willing to own.

If the inventory has been running after midnight and going nowhere, that is the invitation. Schedule a conversation. You do not need the five-year plan first. You need a place to stop circling.
